In a time of financial dificulties ourselves, we decided to stretch our faith and increase our financial seed from our Home Missions Department here at Mending Hearts. We are excited to be financial and prayer partners with the "City Rescue Mission" of Oklahoma City. We believe in what they are doing and it is good soil!
Mission Statement
City Rescue Mission, according to Christian principles provides health, safety, physical, and spiritual support services to anyone in need and assists individuals in becoming independent, dignified and productive members of society.
History
City Rescue Mission, Inc., founded in May of 1960 by a concerned group of businessmen, was started in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City's old Skid Row. This area, surrounded by secondhand clothing stores, small, dingy hotels and pawn shops, was home to countless transients. Run by Mr. and Mrs. Herman Janzen, the Mission operated on the theory that the downcast, downtrodden and unfortunate needed Christ, a hot meal, a bath, and a place to spend the night. At this time the Mission was serving transient men with only 20 beds and one shower.

In 1968, with the help of numerous local churches, City Rescue Mission purchased property and moved to 523 S. Robinson doubling its capacity and increasing services to include women. In 1977, the Janzens retired and Mr. and Mrs. Milton (Mickey) Kalman took over operating the Mission under the motto: "soup, soap, and salvation." In 1979, the mortgage was paid in full, but the need for services was increasing. Homeless families began to emerge as a growing community concern.
Over the last four decades, City Rescue Mission has come to be recognized for providing more than beds and food for the area's homeless and destitute. It has gained respect locally and nationally for its comprehensive, holistic approach to serving those in need. Financial support of the Mission comes from donations made by concerned individuals, churches, businesses, private foundations and civic organizations; the Mission receives no government funding. City Rescue Mission is a member of the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions, the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, and the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce.
Currently the Mission provides case management, spiritual enrichment, educational services, counseling and rehabilitation activities for men, women, children and families. These clients come from diverse economic, social, racial, and cultural backgrounds. The causes of each client's impaired function and homelessness are numerous ranging from job loss, medical problems, family breakdown, substance abuse, incarceration, domestic violence, mental illness, to lack of educational opportunities. Due to these impairments, the clients have experienced significant role loss and can no longer adequately function in self-care, family care, work, leisure, and socialization.
City Rescue Mission's efforts are geared toward rescuing and restoring lives of the homeless serving both transient and long-term clients. Rescue and Restoration Program, the Mission's long-term restoration program, provides the skills individuals need to live in society. This includes personal hygiene, social skills, communication skills, teamwork, job search and job maintenance, and securing a residence and transportation. Clients are treated by a multidisciplinary restorative team comprised of specialists in the fields of occupational therapy, social work, substance abuse treatment, health care, vocational training, and spiritual life development who are committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness and restoring the clients to a productive life.
